WRITTEN STATEMENT DESCRIBING PROPOSED DESIGN

This design, titled “Red/Ball/Tree”, is proposed to highlight the concept of DEMENTIA, and to promote awareness of the role of evaluation tools in obtaining a proper diagnosis for mental health issues.
The proposed design will be produced using ACRYLIC PAINT. The design element of the puzzle pieces disengaging off the top margin of the head alludes to the feeling of persons with memory problems often feeling mentally fractured and disorganized. The design element of the red balls and trees refer to a popular standard diagnostic tool used by mental health professionals to test short-term memory ability. The diagnostic tool is referred to as the “Mini-Mental Status Exam” or “MMSE”, which asks the person being tested to try to remember the three words “red”, “ball”, and “tree” and the person being tested is asked to recall the 3 words after 1 minute of conversation and after 3 minutes of additional conversation. This question and several others are “graded” and the tester can then give a score from 0-30 which gives a baseline of cognitive functioning in adults.
